Varsity Boys’ Baseball has a long history characterized by gritty, multitalented athletes. Coach Tyler Wosleger and coach Shawn Desjardins are focused on creating a championship culture on the Hill. A Westminster baseball player demonstrates grit and grace on and off the field. Martlet baseball players understand the importance of being good members of the Westminster community and fierce competitors in all that they do.
As a program, Westminster baseball is driven by three specific goals:
Developing players — The coaching staff aims to help make players better through hard work, mental training and a competitive schedule. Throughout their time at Westminster, players have the opportunity to workout in our fitness facilities, use the batting cages and work toward their goals year-round. Improving as a baseball player does not happen overnight and players understand, “process over outcome.” During the season, players spend time going over the mental side of the game. Given the nature of baseball, the coaching staff believes that players must set aside time to train mental toughness. For Martlet baseball players, the focus is on doing everything with purpose and getting 1% better every day.
Creating a competitive environment — The goal each spring is to win games. Coach Wosleger creates a competitive environment in practice every day that translates to success on game day. Competition in practice makes each player better. The hope is that Martlet baseball players will enter each day with a sense of purpose and carefully execute each step of the process.
Fostering student-athletes who value character and integrity — The boarding school environment is a unique place to be a student-athlete. Westminster does an excellent job of preparing student-athletes for college. Martlet baseball players understand the importance of being contributing community members. The coaching staff encourages players to get involved with activities outside of baseball and recognizes that many faculty children look up to our athletes and view them as role models. It is our goal that members of the Westminster community will think of our players as great people, not just strong athletes.
Since arriving at Westminster, Coach Wos has guided the Martlets to a 41-20 record and multiple appearances in the league playoffs.
