Learning Beyond the Classroom

Westminster students who take their learning beyond the classroom develop new capabilities and greater resilience as they navigate their surroundings and make themselves at home around the world. Westminster School is pleased to offer a range of opportunities for academic travel, from short cultural trips to fully immersive experiences.

Our faculty members lead trips in partnership with established educational tour companies. Recent trip offerings have included a panda encounter in China, as well as an exploration of Paris. These trips are typically 2-3 weeks of intensive cultural, historical and linguistic experiences. Most trips are designed primarily as enrichment for those studying the language, but many are open to the entire student body. Costs are in addition to tuition, though limited scholarship funds may be available. Trips will be announced in the spring or fall prior to travel and interested families should contact the faculty guide directly.

More extensive travel study is available through our partner programs. The Semester-at-Sea program offers accepted students the option to spend a portion of their Fifth Form year on an ocean voyage, where they undertake an interdisciplinary college-level academic curriculum focused on global issues. They adhere to a rigorous physical fitness regimen, which leaves them amazed with their growth and accomplishments. For more information on the Semester-At-Sea program and how to apply, contact Westminster’s Academic Office.

Students may choose to spend a full year abroad during their Fifth Form or Sixth Form year. Westminster students accepted by the School Year Abroad (SYA) program experience summer, spring term, or yearlong study and travel in France, Italy or Spain. These programs offer complete immersion in an experienced homestay environment, which Westminster SYA alumni have described as both invaluable to fluency and deeply meaningful. SYA schools are official test sites for SATs and APs, and offer college counseling in conjunction with continued advising from Westminster School college counselors. Program prerequisites vary by country from zero to two years of study. To learn more about how to apply, contact Director of International Student Programming Cara Hugabonne.
