Martlets Fall to Choate

The boys hosted an extremely strong and spirited Choate team on a rare sunny weekday to kick off the official league campaign for the 2025 season. Lots of credit to Choate for immediately imposing their talent and competitiveness in doubles, it was great to be out there and see our Martlets fight to the last ball. Doubles was close in a fair amount of spots, with first time partners Will Henry ‘26 and Alex Brown ‘27 keeping it steady until the end at #3, while Parks Cuskley ‘25 and Liam Hibbard ‘27 almost evened it against two great doubles players for Choate. The highlight may have been Co-Captain Alexei Kocatas ‘25 and Henry Flaton ‘25 at #4. Although the position doesn’t count in the official score, they communicated well, kept each other engaged, and won a lot of close games. While there was a brief glimmer to snag the doubles point, down 1-0 heading to singles. Choate was too good in their depth spots, especially at #3, #4 and #5. After some chances in his first set, Kocatas turned the match completely around in the second, earning some set points. More credit to Choate for capitalizing after saving the set, it was awesome seeing that battle. The highlight goes to Hibbard! Two close sets, earned the split, saved match points from 9-7 down in the super tiebreak, and won it! Cuskley also played great in his home debut, battled some hand blisters, and slightly ran out of steam. Well done to Flaton, Henry, newcomers Jack Pickett ‘26 and Noah Maltby ‘28 for enduring the cold and snagging exhibition wins to build more momentum. Four of the players will be competing this weekend at the Kingswood Invitational Tennis Tournament (KITT) but the whole squad will be back next Wednesday on the road vs. Salisbury.
