Martlets Fall in Jackson Rink

Westminster faced a visiting Yale U15 team this evening and, while the Martlets battled throughout, this old coach must concede that the team was overmatched. The Bulldogs were a talented group: skilled, well coached, and overall played with impressive assertiveness. Veteran netminder Danny Maher ‘26 faced 62 shots this evening (that’s right: 62), turning aside 50, and had his hands full as the Black & Gold defense struggled to keep up with the Bulldogs. In the end, and despite the score, this was a positive experience for the Martlets: this is where the bar is set. As this productive, learning season comes to a close in a week or two, the team must acknowledge that this level of hockey in the Founders League demands a real commitment to consistent effort, long-term growth, and self-awareness. There’s lots of potential on this roster, and the coaches recognize the team’s commitment to each other and to improving. We’ll keep at it. The team will have little time to reflect and respond: the Martlets have long-time rival Avon Old Farms on the schedule for Friday. This is historically one of the highlights of the JV season, and the boys will spend Thursday’s practice time preparing for the Winged Beavers. This game is on the road at Avon, so fans will have to contact their local agents for hard-to-find tickets. The Martlets will be ready. We’ll see you at the rink!
