Martlets Win on the Road

The Martlets were back in action on Monday night, traveling north on Route 10 to face Williston. Both teams were coming off strong victories and looking to keep the momentum going as they neared their February breaks.
Westminster got off to a slow start, with Williston putting pressure on the Black and Gold in the opening minutes. However, about seven minutes in, the Martlets found their rhythm. Blake Burke ’25 opened the scoring for Westminster, and moments later, a fluky bounce off the Zamboni door allowed Brenden Gilooly ’26 to knock the puck into the net. Though an unfortunate bounce for Williston, it was one the Martlets hadn’t been able to catch this month. To cap off the period, Burke ’25 netted his second goal of the night, a short-handed tally, sending the Martlets to the locker room with a 3-0 lead.
Williston came out strong in the second, scoring quickly on the power play to trim the Martlet lead to 2. About halfway through the period, another broken play saw Williston bury a second goal to close the gap to 1. The Martlets knew they needed to step up their game in the third period.
And step up they did. In the final frame, Westminster played a much cleaner game, managing the puck better in the neutral zone and using their team speed to wear down their opponents. After sustained pressure in the offensive zone, it was JJ Hurley ’25 who fired a gorgeous shot, beating the Williston goaltender high on the short side to extend the lead back to 2. The Martlets closed out the game with solid defensive play, including key saves from Jack Fichthorn ’26 to preserve the lead and secure the win.
