Martlets Fall to Ethel Walker

The JV girls basketball team had their first home game of the season against an evenly matched squad from Ethel Walker. The Martlets came out to a sluggish start, only scoring two points in the first quarter. The Walkers came out in a 2-3 zone that rattled the Westy offense. Fortunately, after some key offensive rebounds by sister duo Avuani ‘25 and Arielle Anderson ‘28 the Martlets were able to get to the free throw line for some much needed points. Every time the Walkers went on a run the Martlets were ready to respond with key defensive rebounds or a hustle play to grab a loose ball and lay up. Going into halftime the Martlets were only down by nine points. After regrouping and reiterating the game plan the Martlets came out hot in the second half. Key defensive plays by Adam Dembele ‘25 and Caitlyn Eaton ‘28 helped close the gap. In the fourth quarter the Martlets came within one thanks to key three pointers from Suri Dong ‘28. In the end, the Martlets could not contain the Walkers on the fast break and ended up giving up a few key layups that sealed the game for the Walkers. The overall effort by all players displayed great grit throughout a tough fought game. The Martlets look forward to getting back in the win column next week.
