Martlets Lose Opener to Kingswood-Oxford

The Martlets welcomed the Kingswood-Oxford Wyverns to Williams Hill for the season home opener. The Westminster community came out in droves to support the team for the much anticipated first game of the season. The boys came out strong and took a swift lead of 11-2 early in the first half. Fifth former Ethan Griffin introduced himself to the NEPSAC as he set the tone early by scoring, rebounding, and assisting in the dominant start. The boys continued to fluster K-O for the reminder of the half. Alex Wood ’25 filled a new role as the point guard and showcased his creativity on the court. His ability to create and adapt on the court, paired with his leadership on the team, earned him the title of captain for this season. Sonny Batchelor ’27 also made his debut in the black and gold. He helped keep the momentum alive in the New Gym with electrifying dunks and jump shots to secure a 28-23 lead heading into half time. The Martlets found themselves in foul trouble late in the second half. Big Man Cayden Darnowski ‘25 displayed his veteran skill set by rebounding well and draining a three from beyond the arc. Momentum shifted in favor of the Wyverns, but the boys played hard until the last buzzer. Though the Martlets face their first loss of the season 50-63 they are eager to play Loomis in the New Gym this Saturday.
