Martlets End Season with a Win

The final game of the 2024 season took place on Hovey field on a warm 80 degree November afternoon. The girls of 3rds soccer put themselves in “last game” mode from the opening kick. They played super aggressive ball and prevented many drives from the Porters’ girls. Lily Shuster ‘27 only saw 2 saves as the keeper in the first half. The team was confident heading into the second half yet saw a few drives from Porters make it down to the Westy net. A handball was called, resulting in a penalty. The ensuing kick bounced off the post and the rebound shot was off center, preserving the 0-0 tie with 20 minutes left. Westminster was able to return the favor and craft several drives, one which resulted in a Gloria Oh ‘28 kick that bounced off the post, dropped on the line, but didn’t go in. Frustrated, yet determined, the team worked hard to push the ball back again. With one minute remaining Jennifer Weber ‘26 was pushed down in the box. Gloria Oh ‘28 took the kick and sent a no-doubter above the keeper’s head and in for the dramatic lead. The team was able to run out the clock easily. Special shout outs go to seniors Ellie Pearman ‘25 and Jennifer Yang ‘25 for excellent play. Jennifer enjoyed playing on the turf and had perhaps her best game of the season as the sweeper. The team saw incredible work again from many contributors, including Rotayvia Butler ‘27 and Lilly McMillen ‘27 on defense, as well as solid midfield play from Luna Yang ‘26, Arielle Anderson ‘28, and Mason Turton ‘27. It was a thrilling way to end the season and the team should be very proud of their efforts as well as their grace on the field.
