Martlets Fall to Suffield

Westminster traveled to Suffield on a Friday afternoon after classes rather than on Saturday due to a scheduling snafu. Within five minutes Westminster found itself down 2-0 thanks to a brilliant corner kick placed on a virtual tee in front of the net. The Westminster squad hunkered down and kept it at 2-0 for the remainder of the half. Part of the identity of the team this season has been to return from the half with great energy and confidence. That energy returned as shortly into the second half Luna Yang ‘26 took a shot which bounced off the goalpost and right to striker Gloria Oh ‘28, who knocked it in for a goal. For the first 15 minutes of that half, the team did an incredible job of looking for openings and opportunities to score, keeping Suffield on the defensive. With 15 minutes left in the game, the right striker on the opposing team made a cross to center in the air which was tipped beautifully right into the goal. It was an incredible play for Suffield and seemed to take the air out of the sails of the martlets. Within the next 10 minutes the same striker and center put two more in, leaving the girls of Westminster with a 5-1 loss. Several players played well in this game that was closer than the final score reflects. Luna Yang ‘26 played incredibly well and with high energy. Ellie Mallett ‘28 has seen time up in the striker position over the past two games and seemed to relish the opportunity. Credit also should go to the defense, especially in the first half, for keeping the game close. Macey Sheehan ‘27 and Aerin Kim ‘27 were important players in the role. A big travel week lies ahead for the team as they are going to Indian Mountain School and Deerfield.
