Martlets Tie Frederick Gunn

Our Martlets traveled to Washington, CT to take on the Highlanders of Frederick Gunn School for an unusual Friday match. The game was quite physical and our boys rose to the challenge without taking unnecessary penalties. We had a short bench due to several lingering injuries, illnesses, and a college interview. Essentially, we played with 3 ½ subs; the starting defense played nearly the entire game. FGS packed their defensive zone with a flat 5 across which made penetrating into the final third of the field difficult. Their goalie didn’t have to make many saves, but whenever he picked up the ball he would boom the ball down the field. These kicks created several offensive opportunities for them, but our defense often chased them down and our goalkeeper, Ethan Hernandez ‘27, made several spectacular saves.

While we really wish we could have scored a goal to break their unbeaten season (at least according to their website, although no actual scores are listed so we don’t know whom they have played), this was a great game for us. The coaches are especially proud of the way our boys handled themselves in the face of a physical and “mouthy” team.

For these reasons, our GRIT & Grace player of the game is our entire TEAM!
