Martlets Defeat Kent

The Martlets traveled east to take on Kent. After a brief warmup and a discussion about getting used to the fast indoor surface, we began with three doubles matches and one singles match all playing 8 game pro-sets. Playing together for the first time, Xavier Kahn ‘27 and Daniel Frid ‘27 played solid doubles to win their match at #1 8-5. The fast courts provided good opportunities to close the net and these two did a good job with this. The other two matches were very competitive with many deuces and ended with split results for the Martlets. Calvin Bixby ‘28 and Connor Gray ‘26 had chances to win many games in their match at #2, but fell in a competitive 8-5 scoreline. Similarly, Caden Cramer ‘27 and Rohan Satpathy ‘27 also played many deuces and had long games, but pulled many of them out to seal the 8-3 win. Jeffrey Niu ‘26 played a great match at #5 singles to win 8-2. His serve and consistency dominated this match from the start. This win sealed the martlets being ahead 3-1 after the first round of matches. The next round of match saw the remaining singles matches play. Frid and Kahn continued their strong play in their singles matches, winning 8-3 and 8-4 at #1 and #2 singles respectively. Next off was Jaime Escartin ‘27 who played a solid match at #4 singles, winning 8-5. The final two matches played were very competitive and could have ended with either person winning. Sonny Darnowski ‘28 played a very consistent and steady opponent at #3 singles. After being down 0-3, he fought back and won his match in an exciting tiebreak 11-9 after saving a match point at 8-9! In the exact opposite scenario, Khang Ngo ‘27 was up a break in his match before his opponent fought back and sent the match to a breaker. His opponent played a steady tiebreak and won it 8-7. The boys were excited about the 7-2 victory, but more excited about the stop at Chipotle on the way back. It was a great day for the Martlets and we will be back on the courts on Saturday when we travel to Pomfret.
