Martlets Win in OT

Sam Herdeg ‘27 led the Martlets to a thrilling victory in double overtime. The game started with AOF taking a 10-0 lead and then 15–5 lead. The Martlets finished the first half on an 8-2 run and AOF led 17–13 at the break. In the second half, Herdeg was an unstoppable force. Loose balls, rebounds, and even a few baskets were all part of his game today. Herdeg sank two key free throws late in the half. Bennett Varro ‘27 also came alive in the second stanza. Varao finished with a team high 11 points. With the score tied at 38, Westminster called a timeout with 13 seconds left in the game. Although the boys executed the inbounds play, they did not score and the game went into overtime. Sonny Darnowski ‘28 and Varao helped give Westminster an early lead in the first overtime. But a late AOF basket tied the game at 44. The second overtime began with a keby three-point shot by Manny Cazeau ‘28. Darnowski and Herdeg added baskets and after 40 minutes, Westminster had the lead. When the final whistle blew, Westminster won the game and evened the season series with the Winged Beavers.
