Martlets Fall to Choate

On a sunny and cold Wednesday afternoon, Westminster competed hard for four quarters in a close battle at home against Choate. The Boars jumped out to an early lead as the Martlets struggled to convert on some early scoring chances. Westminster eventually scored late in the first quarter as Lane Gallagher ‘25 hit a rebound from midfielder Kai Leroy’s ‘27 shot into the back of the net in an impressive feat of hand-eye coordination. Choate added a couple more goals in the second quarter before Westminster halved their lead with a goal from Leroy. Westminster played their best lacrosse in the third quarter, cutting the lead to 6-4 with two goals from Attackman Aidan O’Callaghan ‘26 and a second from Leroy. The Martlets had some chances in the fourth quarter, but ultimately struggled to control the ball in the game’s final minutes. Wayne Kelly ‘27 earned the Grit and Grace award with tough and skillful play in the defensive zone and Tyler Ungerman ‘26 did good work battling for the ball at the faceoff dot. Auggie Jiranek ‘27 set the tone for toughness and physicality, winning several hard fought ground balls. Westminster will look to improve their clears and ball control in practice the next two days in preparation for the perennially tough Taft Rhinos who are coming to Simsbury for a Saturday afternoon tilt.
