Martlets Fall on the Road

The Martlets headed up to Mass. looking to bounce back from a tough loss last week. Due to a school-wide outbreak of various illnesses, the Martlets were shorthanded. Fortunately, this small but mighty group did hold their own versus a well-matched Williston team. In the first quarter, the Martlets were down quickly due to some lapses in defense. After a quick time out to reset our focus, the girls were able to score a few quick baskets to come within striking distance of Williston’s lead. Adam Dembele ‘25 lead the team on the defensive end with great energy and focus. Bella Lillien ‘27 lead the team at the point position, orchestrating the offense for each possession. The second quarter was when things started to go the Martlet’s way. Our three-point specialist Suri Dong ‘28 nailed two threes in a row to cut the lead to six. Going into halftime the Martlets were feeling good about their offensive performance and decided to switch things up defensively. In the third quarter, the Martlets switched to a 2-3 zone, which threw off Williston. Great communication from Dembele ‘25 on the back line helped rattle the Williston offense. Ainslee Deptula ‘28 and Pipper Lundin ‘26 provided a strong defensive presence, gathering rebounds and steals for the Martlets. Going into the fourth quarter the game was still tight. Dong ‘28 knocked in two more three-pointers to help keep the Martlets close. Williston went to a box-in-one defense to try to shut Suri down. The Martlets were able to get the ball moving and create some offensive motion. Arielle Anderson ‘28 and Caitlyn Eaton ‘28 also provided the team with grit and energy helping keep the score close. Ultimately, the Martlets committed multiple turnovers in a row, which Williston converted into easy baskets. Even though it was not the outcome the Martlets wanted, the performance, energy, and togetherness were ten times better than the previous game. The girls have a long break before our next match-up with Mrs. Porters.
