Martlets Wings Clipped by WMA

The JV Girls' basketball team suffered its first loss of the season, 25-15 versus a tall and talented Wilbraham and Monson team. The Martlets were sluggish out of the gate scoring only 2 points in the first four minutes. Meanwhile, the Titans went on a 10-0 run utilizing their two post players to score deep in the paint. After a timeout to regroup, the Martlets scored a quick 8 points, with key baskets by Suri Dong ‘28 and Avauni Anderson ‘25, the Martlets erased the Titans lead going into halftime. At the start of the third quarter, the Titans switched to a zone defense, however this did not rattle the Martlets. They responded by adapting and using quick passes to attack the gaps in the zone and score some easy baskets. Key players who lead the team on the offensive end include; Bella Lilien ‘27, Adam Dembele ‘25, and Caitlyn Eaton ‘28. On the defensive end Avauni Anderson ‘25 and Janet Kiburi ‘26 played outstanding low post defense on the two Titan bigs. Both girls displayed immense grit in a particularly physical match up. As time progressed, the Martlets contained the Titans and kept the score close. In the final two minutes of the fourth quarter the Titans ended up going on an 8-0 run, which the Martlets could not respond. Even though they lost the Martlets displayed the utmost amount of grit and grace, having to change up offensives on the fly showed great basketball IQ and the willingness to listen. Great leadership by Anderson and Dembele made that possible. The Martlets host Ethel Walker after the Winter Break where they plan to get back in the win column.
