Martlets Sweep Loomis

After competing in the WALKS scrimmage at Loomis on Wednesday, the Martlets returned to the Island to play the Pelicans in their first match of the season, coming away with a 7-0 sweep. The tone was set at the top of the ladder, as Sophia Lazor ‘27 at #1 and co-captain Elle Wilson ‘26 at #2 both earned 3-0 wins. Each found herself facing a game opponent, but both used deadly kill shots and timely defending to establish and maintain control of their matches. Newcomer Marti Jaramillo ‘27 fought off some jitters, using her power advantage to earn her first win as a Martlet, 3-0 at #3. At #4, the eight points that co-captain Emily Fonner ‘26 won in dropping her second game was the same as the number of points combined that she gave up in the three games she won in her 3-1 win. Co-captain Chase Hager ‘26 was another 3-0 winner at #5, using good depth to neutralize her opponent. The contest of the day occurred at #6 in a seesaw battle for Natasha Johnson ‘27. After dropping the first game narrowly, she came back to earn a bagel in the second game, only to drop the third, putting her back against a wall. Undeterred, she kept her cool and scraped out an 11-9 game four and then a decisive 11-5 game five. The final win was notched by Anna Min ‘27, who took a while, but was ultimately dominant in her 11, 6, 2 win. As an added bonus, Meiyin Ren ‘25 took home a 3-0 win in exhibition play.
