Martlets Defeat Loomis

The girls finished their weekend at the High School Nationals with an exciting 4-3 win that included highlights up and down the ladder. Meiyin Ren ‘25 fell in three at #7, but played an excellent first game that she nearly won (10, 7, 7). Co-captain Chase Hager ‘26 payed her best squash of the tournament, taking one game and nearly taking another at #4 (7, 6, (7), 8). Natasha Johnson Played a 40 minute marathon that might properly have been decided by a coin flip, but instead ended with a disappointing 9-11 fifth game ((5), 11, (9), 8, 9). The top three spots in the ladder set the stage for the victory with decisive wins. At #1, Sophia Lazor ‘27, for the third consecutive match, went down a game, but eventually figured out how to dominate and executed with increasing precision ((10), 10, 3, 6). Co-captain Elle Wilson ‘26 played her best squash of the weekend, using crisp drives to set up her deadly finishing shots in her straight set win at #2 (6, 7, 3). Co-captain Emily Fonner ‘26, like Lazor, went down a game before finding her range and finishing each subsequent game more quickly than the last ((8), 9, 7, 3). The team match was decided by the last match on court, played by Anna Min ‘27 at #6. As she had a mere 12 hours earlier, she ended up in an epic five-gamer that saw innumerable momentum shifts. Today she engineered a happier outcome, shaking off a fourth game squeaker to win decisively in the fifth (9, (8), 7, (13), 5). Some of the excitement could be re-created next weekend as three of the Martlets’ four opponents will be on the Hill next weekend when Westminster will host the C division of the New England tournament.
