Martlets Fall to Choate

The Westminster Girls Varsity Soccer team fell to the Wild Boars of Choate this evening on an away trip to Wallingford. The Martlets came out strong from the first whistle; they possessed the ball well and played composed yet gritty. Just as the Martlets did, Choate also came out with energy, speed, and a willingness to attack. Both teams had moments of momentum, but Choate was the first to strike when awarded a penalty kick about halfway through the first half that allowed them to take the lead. Shortly thereafter, Choate had an unsavable upper-90 goal that left the Martlets trailing 2-0. Despite this, the Martlets did not give up, and battled hard. Their efforts were soon realized with 11 minutes remaining in the half. Izzie Leone ‘27 dribbled up the field and played the ball into the Wild Boar’s 18. Callie Graby ‘28 was there to battle her defender and get a touch to Mia Fluckiger ‘26 who composedly placed the ball past the hands of the Choate goalie and into the back of the net. The score remained at 2-1 for the rest of the game, but the Martlets had multiple dangerous opportunities in the final 40 and persevered. Despite the defeat, it was a great game between two solid teams. The Martlets look to rebound this upcoming Wednesday in their game against Miss Porter’s. The game will be played at home at 3 PM.

Grit and Grace Award: The Grit and Grace Award is awarded to Olivia Martin ‘27 today for her unwavering grittiness in the back line. She worked tirelessly throughout the full 80, and made many crucial tackles that kept the Martlets in the game.
