Martlets Fall to Williston

The Westminster boys hosted Williston this Wednesday. In their first game of the season, the boys demonstrated their understanding of the fundamentals of the sport, while showing their endurance against the larger visiting team. The first quarter was rough for the Martlets, with Williston making several goals on breakaways. Refocusing to mitigate these breakaways, the boys showed improvement in the second quarter, though Williston continued to expand their lead. The second half was where the boys found their stride, scoring a trio of goals in the third quarter, and outscoring Williston in the fourth with four goals, though coming up short of the victory. Three of our returning players scored multiple goals, Reginald Kanu ’25, Captain Jason Hu ’25, and Captain Trent Jones ’25. We also had great performances from some newcomers to the team including Draven Chung ’26 in goal for his first game and Jesse Yang ’27 playing hard and providing some key defense as the team adjusted to Williston’s play style. Our Grit and Grace award this week goes to Simon Stambaugh ’26, recognized after the game by his teammates for his great performance in the pool, including a fantastic stretch of a goal, a steal, and a breakaway after a forced turnover. The growth shown by the players within a one game was great to see, and while the outcome may not have been exactly what they hoped for. The boys are excited for another chance in their double header this Saturday.
