Martlets Fall to Frederick Gunn

The Martlets took the ice at Jackson Rink for their second to last home game of the season. In a tense and tightly contested matchup between Westminster and Frederick Gunn, the game remained scoreless after the first period, as both teams showcased strong defense and excellent goaltending. About five minutes into the second period, senior captain Remi Morello ‘25 received the puck at the blue line and walked off the wall into the middle of the ice. Morello’s initial shot was blocked by a Frederick Gunn player, but Morello was quick to recollect the puck and her second shot beat the goalie high blocker side! Unfortunately for the Martlets, the lead did not last long and Frderick Gunn was able to execute a 2 on 1 to tie it up. The back and forth play continued for the remainder of the period and Gunn was able to add one more to the scoreboard on a powerplay giving the Martlets a one goal deficit heading into the final frame. In the third period, the Martlets came out strong and created solid momentum. With about nine minutes remaining in the period, Mana Shida ‘25 took a shot from the point that snuck behind the goalie and Bella Zapata ‘27 put it home to tie the game at two! Unfortunately, Gunn responded quickly with another goal to break the tie shortly after. The game was a hard-fought battle, with both teams battling for every inch, but it was Frederick Gunn who came out on top, securing the win with a 3-2 final score.
Our Grit and Grace player of the game was sophomore goaltender Kate Epke! Kate made some strong saves for the Martlets, helping to shut down the Frederick Gunn offense when necessary.
