Martlets Shutout on the Road

The Martlets traveled to Greenwich, CT to take on Sacred Heart on this warm fall afternoon. During the first few minutes of play, Sacred Heart controlled the ball, but the Martlets quickly settled into the game. As the first half went on, the Martlets became more confident with their play on the field and they were able to produce some solid scoring chances. Although the Martlets had some offensive corner opportunities and some offensive rushes; they were unable to capitalize on these chances. The defense also stood strong, shutting down a skilled Sacred Heart offense. At times when the Martlets were struggling to create offense the whole team did a great job of limiting Sacred Heart’s opportunities and causing turnovers on the side line. Even with a strong effort from the Martlets, Sacred Heart would add one to the scoreboard giving them the lead as the first half came to a close. During the second half, Sacred Heart started to maintain possession more, limiting the Martlet’s chances. A few nice individual plays from the Martlets were able to break the Sacred Heart defense, but for the majority of the second half, Sacred Heart controlled the play. They would go on to score four goals in the second half, two of which came in the final minutes of the game. Although this was not the outcome the Martlets wanted, there were many positives to take away from the game today, as well as many areas we will look to improve on as we near the final stretch of the season. We look forward to taking on Greenwich Academy this Saturday at 3:30 on Hovey field!
Our Grit and Grace player of the game is Lily O’Callaghan ‘28! Lily’s effort all over the field led to a mix of great defensive and offensive plays for the Martlets!
