Martlets Fall to GHS

We got off to a low start against a skilled, fit, and tenacious Granby High School team. We kept them off the board for the first quarter of the game, but we struggled to control the ball and rarely got it past midfield. A few misplayed unsettled touches and sloppy ballhandling led to the Bears’ first goal, while poor positioning and tentative play created the second scoring play for Granby. We all agreed at halftime that we were not playing with grit and that we were losing too many 50-50 balls and redoubled our commitment. The play on the field in the second half showed our change in attitude. As the half progressed, we spent more and more time in near Granby’s goal, and although we only netted one (a Max Zong ‘28 front-of-the-goal special on a pass from Caden Weichselbaumer ‘28), we had many good scoring chances (a few from just outside the 6) and could have easily scored three or four. Tom Merrill ‘28 was excellent in goal, Soren Techet ‘28 played with (occasionally reckless) tenacity and commitment, Carsten Matthews ‘28 and Winston Caracappa’28 ran all over the field, Justin Li ‘28 was relentless from his speedy left wing post, and Ethan Grover ‘28 and Sam Jiang worked really hard in the back wall. We’re excited to get the chance to play this team again in a week and see what we can do when we play with heart and commitment for two full halves!
