Martlets Tie NMH

The Martlets opened up their 2024 season this Saturday with a draw against the Hoggers of Northfield Mount Hermon. The squad started out strong, and dominated early in the first few minutes of the game with multiple close-to-goal opportunities. That being said, the Hoggers were quick to defend against the Martlets and battled hard throughout the entire 40 minutes. The back-and-forth between the two teams continued until the whistle blew for halftime. Early in the second half, NMH seized an opportunity from a counterattack. They moved the ball into the Westminster defensive third and capitalized by scoring and finding the back of the net. The Hogger lead definitely flipped a switch for the Martlets, and a burst of intensity followed. With 28 minutes left in the game, Westminster was awarded a free kick just outside the Hogger’s 18-yard box. Callie Graby ‘28, played a perfect ball into the box for Caroline Gauvin ‘27 to head into the back of the net. The Martlets continued to have multiple corner and free-kick opportunities as the half progressed but were unlucky in their finishes. Overall, the Martlets learned a lot of different lessons from today’s game that they will carry on into the week ahead in practice, as they continue to try to get into their new rhythm.

The Grit and Grace award today is awarded to Hannah Coccaro ‘26 for her consistent grit throughout all 80 minutes, in addition to her flexibility and willingness to jump into a variety of different positions. Wherever her team needed her, Hannah showed up today.
