Martlets Fall to AOF

The boys cross country team fell to Avon, 21 to 49 on Saturday. Despite the loss, this was a massive improvement from a year ago where they were shutout. This time around, Westy placed three runners in the top six overall as opposed to zero a year ago.

Captain James O’Connell (’25) lead the way in a personal best of 18:39- a monster 44-second drop in his personal best time. Next sprinting across the line was captain Sam Hyde (’25) in 18:59, who also broke 19 minutes for the first time in his Westminster career. Sam was followed by rookie Nick Lopriore (’26) who also set yet another personal best in 19:12.

The final two runners scoring points against AOF for Westy were Matt O’Connell (’25) and Michael Wang (’26), who ran – you guessed it – personal best times in their strongest races of the season. Also running personal bests in this race were Jeff Shao (’26), Liam Murray (’26), and Niraj Prakash (’26) who personally clocked an almost two minute personal best again this week. Lastly, a big shoutout to Alessio Suarez (’28) who ran his debut 5k this week.

Grit and Grace Award: Similar to last week, nine out of twelve runners set season or personal bests during this race, so the dual Grit and Grace Award goes to captains Sam Hyde (’25) and James O’Connell (’25) who continue to lead and inspire even deep into the season.
