Martlets Fall to Lawrenceville

The Westminster Girls' Hockey team faced a tough loss to Lawrenceville on Wednesday night in their first game of 2025, dropping a hard-fought contest 5-4 at Jackson Rink. The game kicked off with an early goal from Lawrenceville at 15:24, taking a 1-0 lead. However, the Martlets quickly responded, with senior captain Adrienne Hall ‘25 scoring at 13:27 to even the score at 1-1. Hall skated onto a loose puck in the offensive zone and continued with speed around the net and got a quick shot off that beat the goalie top left. Lawrenceville regained the lead at 3:05, making it 2-1 as they capitalized off a stint of sustained offensive zone pressure. The period ended with Lawrenceville holding a slim 2-1 advantage.
Westminster came out strong in the second, with freshman Ruby Robertson ‘28 scoring her first career goal as a Martlet at 3:05 on the power play. Rose Robertson ‘28 passed it to Ruby Robertson on the half wall, Ruby quickly cut to the middle of the ice and got a shot on net, which beat the goaltender. The impressive play from the Robertson sisters tied the game at 2! The Martlets then took their first lead of the game at 8:44, as sophomore Bella Zapata ‘27 scored an excellent goal, assisted by Adrienne Hall. Zapata broke the puck out of the zone and passed it to Hall, who was cutting through the neutral zone with speed. Hall gained the zone, then made an impressive pass to Zapata, who finished the play to give Westminster a 3-2 lead. However, Lawrenceville answered back with a goal at 5:38, tying the game at 3-3. The period ended with the teams deadlocked at 3-3, setting the stage for a thrilling final frame.

The Martlets took the lead early in the third period, with Piper Chaisson ‘27 scoring at 17:30. The goal came after a smart play from junior defenseman Izzy Hurkala ‘26, who intercepted a pass at the blue line and created a 2-on-1 opportunity. Hurkala’s pass across to Chaisson was deflected by a Lawrenceville stick, but Chaisson fought for the puck and finished the play to give Westminster a 4-3 lead. Unfortunately, Lawrenceville responded quickly, tying the game at 16:49. The visitors then scored again at 10:52, taking a 5-4 lead and holding onto it for the remainder of the game. Despite several late opportunities, the Martlets were unable to find the equalizer, and the game ended with a hard-fought 5-4 loss.
