Martlets Fall to Williston

The Martlets opened up the Harrington tournament today in snowy Milton, MA! The first matchup was against a talented Williston Northampton team. Williston came out strong, but the Martlets' hard work and structure in the defensive zone kept the first period damage to a minimum. The Wildcats were able to capitalize on two defensive zone breakdowns throughout the period bringing the score to 2-0 at the end of the first. As the second period got underway, it was clear that the Martlets were determined to make a comeback. Not long into the period, sophomore forward Bella Zapata showed off her speed by beating a Williston player to the puck in the corner to get the icing called off. Zapata’s hard work would lead to sustained offensive zone time for the Martlets. Sophomore forward Piper Chaisson gathered the puck along the boards near the hash marks, quickly turned, and fired a shot on net. The puck zoomed over the Williston's goalie shoulder to give the new sophomore forward her first goal as a Martlet! The bench erupted in excitement! This goal gave the Martlets the momentum they needed throughout the rest of the period. Although the Martlet’s did not score again this period, they played their most complete 15 minutes they have all year. The Martlets would head into the third period down by one and still feeling like they had the momentum. Unfortunately Williston would take over the third period by netting three goals. The final score was 5-1 wildcats. Although the Martlets were hoping to finish the comeback, there were many positives to take away from the game and the Martlets continue taking steps forward as a team. The team has two games tomorrow at Nobles. The first matchup is at 8:30am against Nobles and then a night matchup against Lawrence Academy at 6:30pm.

Our Grit and Grace player of the game goes to Bella Zapata ‘27! Zapata’s effort all over the ice led to the Martlet’s second period goal as well as many other significant moments during the game!
