Martlets Fall to St. Mark's

The Martlets kicked off the 2024-2025 season with a home match-up against St. Marks! The team was excited to get the season underway and the lively atmosphere at Jackson Rink added to that excitement. St. Marks got off to a quick start when they netted the first goal of the game just over a minute into the first period. The Martlets didn’t let the lone goal deter them from battling hard. A few minutes later, St. Marks would receive a hooking penalty, sending the Martlets on the powerplay. The Martlets never quite got in a rhythm and St. Marks made it a successful penalty kill. Shortly after, Westminster would have two more power play opportunities, but were unable to capitalize on those as well. While the team regrouped in the locker room, they knew they had more to give and some system related concepts to clean up, all very doable. The Martlets entered the second period looking rejuvenated and ready to get on the scoreboard. It was a back and forth second period, with the Martlets having moments of prolonged possession. About halfway through the period, both teams began to make frequent trips to the penalty box. The teams combined for six penalties throughout the period, with both teams receiving three. St. Marks was able to add two to the scoreboard, both on power plays, while the Martlets could not find the back of the net. This would bring the score to 3-0 heading into the last period. Sophomore goalie, Kate Epke ‘27, looked strong in net and made some huge saves for the Martlets! The Martlets would continue to work hard through the third period, but could not break the ice against a strong St. Mark’s goalie. The Lions would score their final goal with about five minutes remaining in the game to bring the score to 4-0. Although a disappointing loss for the Martlets, the team looks to spend their practice time focusing on the things they need to work on, while taking the positives with them into their next game against The Hill School at 3pm on Saturday. The game will be played at Brunswick School, a neutral site for both teams.

Our Grit and Grace player of the game is Piper Chaisson ‘27! In her first game wearing the black and gold, Piper was relentless all over the ice!
