Martlets Defeat Wild Boars

The Westminster 3rds Girls Soccer team traveled to Choate on a grey Saturday afternoon. They emerged with an impressive 2-1 victory. The team dominated the first 20 minutes of the game, allowing only one shot on goal while putting in one of their own - a loose ball in front of Choate’s net that Gloria Oh ‘28 tapped in. Then the Choate team suddenly found a boost of energy and spent the remaining time of the first half on Westminster’s side of the field, eventually knocking in the tying goal. After the half, the team responded. Less than five minutes into the second half, Sophie McKenna ‘27 took a pass from Ilana Mezheritskiy ‘27 and deposited it into the Choate goal for what would turn out to be the decisive match point. This was an incredibly intense second half, as Westminster had a “bend but not break” style of play. At one point goalie Mason Turton ‘27 made a kick save off of a deflection: the ball bounced off the post instead of going in. It should be noted that this was Mason’s first game playing that position. Several players were outstanding in the second half and were instrumental in keeping Choate to one. Defensive players Nia Morgan ‘27, Macey Sheehan ‘27 and Lilly McMillen ‘27 all saw plenty of game time in the half and played extremely well. Jennifer Yang ‘25 and Luna Yang ‘26 played the entire half and Luna had her best game of the season which also included two shots on goal. Caroline Hebbeler ‘27 and newcomer Arielle Anderson ‘28 provided consistency in the center of the field throughout the second half. The team has two games this coming week and hopes to bring the momentum of this hard fought victory into those matches.
