Martlets fall to Bearcats

The Martlets suffered a loss yesterday on the road versus Hotchkiss. The teams were evenly matched and the girls could get out to a fast start. Utilizing our speed, the Martlets took off for a couple of quick fast-break baskets to give them a 6-0 lead in the first quarter. As the game moved on the Martlets had trouble against the Bearcats' 1-3-1 zone defense. The offensive was too stagnant, which led to dead possessions and missed opportunities. Bella Lilien ‘27 did a great job handling the ball and facilitating what she could on the offensive end of the court. Avauni Anderson ‘25 helped keep the Martlets in the game with her strong takes to the basket. Going into the second quarter, the Bearcats capitalized on lapses in defense to score multiple easy baskets in a row. At the end of the first half the Marlets were only down by 2. The girls regrouped and decided to focus on defense in the second half. The energy was slightly better at the start of the third quarter. Emma Isakoff ‘25 gave the Martlets the spark they needed grabbing steals and getting multiple stops in a row. Unfortunately, Westminster could not convert on the offensive end. There were a couple of much-needed three-pointers from Suri Dong ‘28, but they were not enough to keep the Martlets in the game. In the fourth quarter, the defensive energy picked up, but it was a little too late. The Bearcats were able to seal the deal with multiple layups. The girls put up a great fight, but could not get it done in the end. The Martlets hope to get back in the “win" column Saturday against Taft.
