Martlets Fall to Deerfield

On a beautiful and unseasonably warm fall day in the Pioneer Valley, we fared much better than we did in our home math against Deerfield, but the outcome was still unsatisfactory. DA held the advantage for most of the first half, but we held them to a 0-0 tie until two minutes before the intermission. We again played them mostly evenly in the second half and met our goals of getting multiple shots on goal in each of our first two “shifts” of the half, a couple of them coming at nearly point-blank range. Alas, we couldn’t find the net, and DA added another late goal with about three minutes left in the game off of a chaotic rebound on a corner kick. Sonny Darnowski ‘28 played really well in the back line. Goalie Henry Brooks ‘28 had his best effort of the season and tallied 15 total saves, several of them diving and dramatic. Center back Soren Techet ‘28 earned the Grit & Grace awar of the game for playing a double shift in each half, playing in the back line with courage and tenacity, and even getting the offensive rush triggered on a few occasions. We lost to a better opponent today, but we did a lot of good things, and overall we are trending in the right direction.
