Martlets Open Season with a Win

The Martlets kicked off their 2024-2025 campaign with a 4-2 win over the Hoggers from Northfield at Jackson Rink, much to the delight of the loyal Martlet faithful. The Black and Gold wasted no time, taking the lead in the first minute of play. Tommy Coccaro '26 sent a pass to Blake Burke '25, who was streaking toward the net. While the Hogger goalie made the initial save, Burke pounced on the rebound to give the Martlets a 1-0 advantage.
Just 20 seconds later, the Martlets were on a 4v3 power play. Captain JJ Hurley '25 collected a loose puck at the blue line, moved to the center of the ice, and fired a shot that snuck through traffic to extend the lead to 2-0. The first period, however, lacked flow and was marred by penalties. Easton Masse '25 added a third goal off a nice pass from Blake Burke '25, putting the Martlets up 3-0.
The second period saw marginally better execution from both teams. NMH applied pressure, firing numerous shots on Jack Fichthorn '26, who stood tall in net, turning away multiple bids. The Hoggers found their footing, scoring two unanswered goals—one at even strength and one on the power play—to close the gap to 3-2. However, the Martlets responded late in the period when JJ Hurley '25 threaded a perfect pass to Derek Rhodes '25 in the slot. Rhodes one-timed the puck past the Hogger goalie, sending the Martlets into the break with a 4-2 lead.
Both teams played their best hockey in the final period, but the Martlets weathered a few pushes from NMH to secure the 4-2 victory. Jack Fichthorn was outstanding in net, stopping 32 of 34 shots. The Martlets will host Choate in their first Founders League game this Wednesday at Jackson Rink.
Grit award to Corbin Simon’s for playing great defensively!
