Martlets Defeat Deerfield

In their opening game of the season the JV Girls Basketball team made a trip to Deerfield well worth it when they won in a DOUBLE overtime thriller 29-27. The Martlets came out of the gate with great energy at the start of the first quarter. Everyone worked together to play team basketball, helping each other on both sides of the ball. Emma Isakoff ‘25 played a key role off the bench, helping her teammates on defense and racking up multiple steals. The Martlets were able to gain a little lead late in the third quarter. Deerfield went on an 8-0 at the start of the fourth quarter, however this did not rattle the Martlets. They came out of the time out ready to attack, key baskets from Avauni Anderson ‘25, Bella Lilien ‘27, and Piper Lundin 26’ helped bring the Martlets back to tie the game. There was a chance for the Martlets to win the game at the end of the fourth quarter, but we could not convert and into overtime we went! The first overtime proved to be a tough one with both teams in the double bonus. It was a game of foul shots. Once again key foul shots were made by Adam Dembele ‘25 and Bella Lilien ‘27. The score was back and forth for the remaining minutes of overtime, but the result was the same and the Martlets were headed into double overtime. In the final four minutes the Martlets displayed the utmost grit pushing through an aggressive Deerfield team and gaining a small lead. When the clock was ticking down the Martlets stole the ball, Suri Dong ‘28 made a key pass into Avauni Anderson ‘25 who scored the winning basket! Extremely poetic for Anderson who has been a three year member of the team and our captain. The Martlets took home their first win of the season and first victory over Deerfield in recent history.
