Martlets Shutout Choate

For their second match against each other this season, the girls from Choate made the drive to Westminster. For much of the first half both teams battled in the middle of the field. Very few opportunities seemed to make their way towards either goal. The result was a 0-0 tie at the half. During the half, the Martlets made just a few adjustments and were determined to play hard through the end of the game. Fifteen minutes into the half, Caroline Hebbeler ‘27 made a controlled pass over to striker Ilana Mezheriskiy ‘27 while the Choate goalkeeper was out of position. Ilana punched the ball into the net for an easy goal. This gave the team incredible momentum. Even with this momentum Choate was able to find some opportunities down on Westminster’s side of the field. Lily Shuster ‘27, goalkeeper, was able to handle them all and preserve the shutout. With just a few minutes left in the game a Choate player suffered an injury, and true to the sportsmanship that this team has shown all season, Westminster graciously returned the possession to Choate on a Westy throw-in. Within seconds the ball was pushed back into the Choate side of the field. A loose ball was headed by Jennifer Weber ‘26 into a perfect spot for Gloria Oh ‘28 to take it down field for a breakaway goal which sealed the victory with a minute left. All three victories of the season have been true team victories, with all players contributing to the effort. Gloria Oh ‘28, Mason Turton ‘27, Luna Yang ‘26, Macey Sheehan ‘27, Rotayvia Butler ‘27, Jennifer Yang ‘25 among many others made incredible plays throughout both halves. The team does not play again until next Wednesday against Miss Porter’s school but hopefully the momentum of this victory sustains them through the long weekend. It should be noted that in 14 tries against Choate since 2012, this is only the Martlets 4th victory against them, and 2 of those 4 wins have been in the 2024 season.
