Martlets Fall to DA

The 3rds Girls’ Soccer squad began their season with an exciting, physical match against Deerfield. Though the team led at the half 2-1, they ended up losing a close 4-3 final. There were so many strong moments for the young martlets throughout so they can walk away proud of their effort and teamwork. Notable players include Caroline Hebbeler ‘27 who played the entire first half at midfield and over the course of the game compiled two assists on throw-ins. Goals in the first half were scored by Kaitlyn Buda ‘27 and Sophie McKenna ‘27 after some excellent work getting the ball down the field. The team got a 3-2 lead thanks to an excellent goal by newcomer Maddy Manafort ‘28 who snuck a shot past the goalie while facing pressure on the right side of the box. The game only remained close thanks to stellar goalie play from Lily Shuster ‘27, who at one point blocked a shot while falling down and was able to stop the rebound from becoming a score by somehow traveling many feet away. She is both literally and figuratively picking up where she left off after showing incredible improvement last season. The team has a sense of what it needs to do to improve and there are many reasons for optimism after this first game of the year.
